Thousands of dead fish washed ashore on Buckroe Beach Wednesday

In Hampton tens of thousands of dead fish turned up on Buckroe Beach today. The company Omega Protein estimates it lost bewtween 40000 to 50000 menhaden fish when its net ripped as fishermen were attempting to pull the net in. Menhaden fish are rich in oils, making Omega Protein the world’s largest producer of Omega-3 fish oil. People fishing from Buckroe Pier noticed dead fish floating in the water yesterday afternoon. “That’s when we first saw all of these little white spots on the water and it was dead fish floating everywhere,” said Carolyn Tyree, fisherman. This morning a trail of fish lined Buckroe Beach for miles. On Monday Omega Protein – based in Texas with offices in Reedville, Virginia – was trying to bring in a catch of menhaden bunker fish. A company spokesman said the bottom net caught onto something and ripped, allowing the fish to escape. Many were already dead because of the stressful netting process. Days later they were washing ashore. “They were just floating in with the tide going out toward the bridge,” said Tony Brown, fisherman.
